Although Tesla’s Powerwall is slightly cheaper, with starting costs of around $7,600 before installation and permitting fees, it’s also less powerful.

The Tesla Powerwall can provide up to 5kW of continuous energy per storage cabinet. The Generac system, on the other hand, can provide almost double the power at 9kW. It also offers a greater storage capacity of up to 18kWh, versus the Tesla Powerwall’s maximum 13.5kWh capacity.

It’s also relevant to note that neither the Tesla Powerwall nor the Generac PWRcell comes with solar arrays. Homeowners will have to purchase solar panels separately and have them installed by a professional if they want to take full advantage of their battery banks, especially during power outages.

The Bottom Line

Both Generac and Tesla make fantastic and surprisingly affordable battery systems. Homeowners who aren’t sure which one to choose should speak with a vendor that sells both popular products.
